The Apricot Tree and The Cherry Tree

It’s spring in Tokyo. The cherry tree in DRAFT’s garden has bloomed, and it’s beautiful. The petals are starting to fall a little, and the ground is beginning to be covered in a light pink carpet which is also very beautiful. It’s like we’re having a cherry blossom viewing party everyday. While we work, we often say, “It’s really relaxing, isn’t it?”

But that’s when it happens. “That cherry tree isn’t fair. When the apricot tree was in full bloom, we were quite indifferent to it, and when its petals fell, the cherry tree suddenly began to bloom.” It was Mr. Miyata. Sometimes, well, not sometimes but always, Mr. Miyata says surprising things without any hesitation. If I look back, I now remember that the apricot tree had magnificent flowers even before the cherry tree bloomed.

After a few months, the apricot tree bears fruit, and every year, we harvest the fruit and eat them. The apricot tree’s flowers are gone now, and its leaves are starting to come out. I realize that it’s doing its very best to bear fruit.

If I look at the whole garden, there are lilies, horsetails and small flowers whose names I don’t even know that are showing their lovely faces everywhere. It’s not the cherry tree’s fault, but I’m a little ashamed that I’ve only been looking at its blossoms and I’ve ignored the rest. I really should be fairer and try to look at everything. And even after its petals have fallen, I’d like to be the kind of person who still enjoys looking at the cherry tree.

It’s a trifling thing, but it strengthens my resolve this spring.
