Production for the 2016 calendars started in February, early into 2015. The designers for the 2016 versions are: D-BROS art directors Ryosuke Uehara and Yoshie Watanabe of KIGI, DRAFT designers Eriko Kawakami, Takuma Fukuzawa and Hiroka Osada, and Takahiro Osada who left DRAFT in May to strike out on his own. Aside from the designers, the calendar production team includes DRAFT’s president and creative director Satoru Miyata , D-BROS’s brand manager, those in charge of the production process, the managing director and those in charge of sales.

Product meetings conducted once every two weeks were serious affairs for the designers. It took six months until the design gradually solidified, and by February the calendars were almost complete which surprised the designers the most. From that point, up close, it felt like they took the time to enhance the products’ precision to the highest level. I really felt the importance of the home stretch. All of the designers are high-caliber graphic designers working at the frontline of design so they are well-versed in expression; and their knowledge of printing technologies and paper is amazing! This was precisely why everyone had their own “fixations,” LOL. They made those “fixations” real; and to commercialize the products, the managing director and the production process team raced to negotiate with a number of printing presses and to search for papers. It took three months to select and test the paper for one calendar.

D-BROS calendars are beloved by many people every year, and many others buy them. This year, not only do we plan to share the splendor of “things” themselves, but we will also write about the designers’ thoughts behind the production process in D-BROS MAGAZINE.
