In Japan, kamon is a symbol or mark that signifies a family's lineage. It is a family crest that has been handed down from generation to generation. Furoshiki is a square cloth that is used to wrap objects. It is said that its origins lie in the Nara Period (710-794), and the Japanese have long used furoshiki to carry and store things. Because one furoshiki can wrap bottles and boxes of various shapes, it has been used by merchants for transport, by travelers for packing things, and by many to wrap congratulatory gifts.

・ If you would like to iron your furoshiki, place a press cloth over the furoshiki first and iron at medium heat (140℃ - 160℃).
・ This furoshiki is washable, and may be hand-washed or machine-washed at a low setting with weak water flow.
・ Made of 100% silk, and may shrink.

一ツ折鷹の羽の丸
hitotsu ore taka no ha no maru
One Folded Hawk Feather in a Circle

Keen, agile, and brave, the hawk was lovingly raised by falconers who practiced falconry. Also, the hawk’s feathers were used as arrow feathers; and as symbolic articles of military men, were incorporated in kamon. This kamon can be seen all over Japan, and is such an exemplary kamon that it is one of the “five great kamon,” (kamon that are the most commonly used). It is the shrine crest of the Aso Shrine in Kumamoto Prefecture. It is a widely seen kamon, being the kamon of the Aso clan’s chief priest, and the kamon of the shrine’s parishioners.
